About Sobaeksan National Park

Sobaeksan National Park, established in 1987, is located in the central part of South Korea, spanning the provinces of Chungcheongbuk-do and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The park centers around Mount Sobaeksan, which rises to 1,439 meters (4,721 feet), making it one of the prominent peaks in the Sobaek mountain range. The park's topography features rugged ridges, deep valleys, and alpine meadows, providing a diverse range of habitats. Ecologically, Sobaeksan supports mixed temperate forests with species such as Korean pine, maple, and oak, alongside rare flora and fauna including several protected birds and mammals. Historically, the park area has been important culturally and spiritually, with Buddhist hermitages dotted among the mountain slopes. Key recreation opportunities include hiking a network of well-maintained trails that offer spectacular panoramic views, mountain climbing, camping, and birdwatching. Notable landmarks within the park include the Cheongnyangsa Temple, which dates back centuries, and the scenic landmarks Baegunbong Peak and the Sobaeksan Observatory, known for stargazing given its dark skies. Visitors are drawn to Sobaeksan National Park for its relatively unspoiled wilderness combined with accessible infrastructure, making it a treasured outdoor sanctuary and a hub for eco-tourism and cultural pilgrimage alike.
